Maia is the East Wing of La Alcantarilla.

The entrance to Maia is through an old wooden door and into a walled courtyard filled with terracotta pots of flowers, herbs and climbing plants.

The kitchen and sitting room both open onto this patio which offers both winter sun and summer shade.

The kitchen has painted wooden cupboards and shelves and a granite work surface. There is a double sink and it is equipped with a vitro ceramic hob, extractor hood, an electric oven, microwave, toaster, food processor, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and a washing machine.

There is a breakfast table for six people with views onto the patio.

The sitting room has a log burning stove for winter warmth and thick stone walls which means that the house maintains its heat during the winter and remains incredibly cool in summer.

The house is centrally heated in the winter and every window is double-glazed and has wooden shutters as protection against the intense midday heat during the summer months.

There are two three-seater sofas and an armchair. The television offers IPTV streamed British channels and a DVD player and library is provided.

The house is full of Spanish reference books, novels and art books.



A further south facing living area opens onto the walled garden and has three sets of windows with views of the cobbled terrace allowing for sunshine throughout the day. There is space in this large room for both a three-seater sofa, an armchair and coffee table at one end and a dining table for 6 - 8 people at the other.

Maia has three bedrooms and one bathroom.

The floors upstairs are all carpeted in local rush matting and all bedrooms have wardrobes, chairs to sling clothes, chest of drawers, mirrors, bedside tables and lamps and wall lights.

In the summer we provide mosquito nets so that guests can sleep with the windows and doors open. Since the temperatures always drop to a comfortably cool level there is no need for air conditioning although we do provide fans for those who feel the need.

The principal bedroom has a 150cm bed and balcony doors overlooking the south facing terrace, main garden and palm tree.

The second has twin beds and a nursing chair.

The third has a smaller double of 135 cm. All sheets are 100 per cent cotton.

The pale aqua-tiled bathroom has a bath with shower attachment, loo and washbasin with travertine marble surround and shelves.

We provide soap, liquid hand soap, loo paper and, of course, pure cotton bath and hand towels, face cloths and swimming pool towels.

Maia opens onto a walled garden edged by an agapanthus lined path and rose-bedecked pergola leading towards a vine covered seating area with views of Ronda and its surrounding hills.

Ancient olive trees sit among fig, mulberry and pomegranate trees, underplanted with spring flowering iris. Rose beds are filled with lavender and daisies.

An old stone water feature trickles water onto a pantiled course that flows through the garden.

By the house, under the shade of a cane roof there are floor and scatter cushions for relaxing, and a wooden table and chairs for outside dining.



There is also a smaller walled courtyard by the kitchen and sitting room. A lemon tree stands in one corner and a rose bush in the other. Flowers, herbs and climbing plants decorate the patio and a table and chair provide the perfect spot for a cup of tea or morning coffee.

Just a short walk away - across an old stone bridge and a burbling brook - is a stunning 11 metre saltwater pool. Shared with Villa Alfredo the pool is encircled by a lawn and flower beds planted with lilies, white gladioli and lavender. It is set in an acre of orchards and walnut trees with wonderful views of the Grazalema mountains and sun all day and evening.



Next to it is a play area, with swings and climbing frames for young children and a badminton set for all the family.
